Energy Hygiene: Stop Giving Your Energy Away and Choose Peace Instead

What are you giving your energy to?
A few weeks ago, I was running about fifteen minutes later than usual.
I wasn’t actually late. My first client wasn’t until 10:00 a.m., and I would still arrive with plenty of time to prepare myself and set the energy of my office. But I was out of my normal routine, and apparently my nervous system had opinions about that.
As soon as I got into my car, I remembered that I needed to carry a huge five-gallon bottle of water upstairs to my office. Annoying, but it maybe added an extra minute. Then I remembered I needed gas, which maybe added another five minutes. Still not a crisis, but I could feel myself becoming increasingly irritated.
As I began backing out of my driveway, my camera was clear, but when I turned to do a shoulder check, I noticed a man standing on the sidewalk. I immediately rolled down my window, apologized, and waved for him to continue. He grunted and irritably waved me on. I had done nothing wrong. He had done nothing terrible. It was a five-second interaction between two strangers. But as I drove away, I caught myself creating an entire story about him in my head.
Then I stopped.
Nope, Dena. We are not doing this today.
I consciously pulled my energy back. I acknowledged that my irritation had begun before I ever encountered that man. I had left later than I normally do, forgotten about the water and gas, and allowed a few minor inconveniences to knock me out of alignment.
That was mine to own.
A few minutes later, I stopped at a light and noticed the car in front of me covered in bumper stickers that were very much not aligned with my values. All I could do was laugh. That was my immediate sign that I had dipped in frequency. Yes, I wholeheartedly KNOW that I would not have seen that vehicle had I not lowered my frequency. That is how energy works. The Universe was asking, “Would you like another opportunity to give your power away?”
No, thank you.
I gently drove around the car and made a conscious decision: I was not dipping my energy for the rest of the day.
This is Energy Hygiene.
It doesn’t mean we never become frustrated, irritated, angry, or triggered. It means we notice when our energy shifts and take responsibility for what happens next.
We can choose what we focus on.
We can choose which stories we continue telling.
We can choose what we release.
We can choose what no longer receives our precious energy.
I recently came across a video attributed to Bruce Lee. In it, he says, “You don’t find peace. You choose it—by what you ignore, by what you release, and by what you stop giving energy to.” That is exactly what happened that morning. https://youtube.com/shorts/-4SEMDOxbRc?is=ibYWP__SQ5a3tnpP
I could have carried my irritation into my office, into my sessions, and throughout the rest of my day. Some people carry a difficult Monday into the entire week.
Let’s not do that.
One uncomfortable moment does not deserve our whole day. One irritating person does not deserve unlimited access to our energy. One thought does not need to become an entire emotional experience.
Catch it. Own it. Clear it. Choose again. When we change our energy, we change what happens next.
